Organizational Sketch: The Eclectas Club of Dothan, Alabama, was originally a Soroptimist Club, founded by Soroptimist members from Montgomery and chartered on March 17, 1956.  In 1964, the club members became dissatisfied with the Soroptimist Federation and reorganized as an independent society.  Dr. Carlisle Miller, the minister of the First United Methodist Church, Dothan, suggested to club member Clara Flowers that the club rename itself "Eclectas" - Greek for "Best of Women".  [Source: File 170-14-0729-001-003 "History of the Eclectas Club"]

Scope / Content Note: Contains materials from the Soroptimist Club (precursor to the Eclectas Club), certificates, history, constitution and bylaws, meeting minutes, 1966-2012, president and treasurer reports, annual programs, 1971-2004, and scrapbooks, 1965-2005.

Organization: Organized into 3 series:

1. Series 1. Club Operations, ca. 1960-2015 [45 Files]: Materials related to the running of the Eclectas Club. Contains correspondence, constitution and bylaws, meeting minutes and officers' reports.
2.  
3. Series 2. History, 1965-2014 [25 Files]: Materials detailing history of the Eclectas Club. Contains scrapbooks, Annual programs and compiled history of the club presented to new members.
4.  
5. Series 3. Reference, ca. 1965 - 2012 [3 Files]: Materials offering information about the Eclectas Club but not directly tied to its operations or history.  Contains information from the Soroptimist Club (precursor to Eclectas) and awards and certificates presented to the Eclectas Club.

Provenance: Materials were housed in the Local History Room of the Houston Love Memorial Library by the Eclectas Club.  When the library moved to a new building, materials were returned to their respective clubs or transferred to Landmark Park, run by the Dothan Landmarks Foundation, Inc. (DLF).  DLF transferred the materials to the Wiregrass Archives in Spring 2014.
