Guide To The Francis Farris Memoir

Record Group 024

Date Span: ca. 2002

Extent: 1 file folder

VHP Administrative History:  In 2000, Congress, recognizing that 1500 veterans died per day, directed the Library of Congress to initiate a nationwide project to collect the stories of veterans, family members, defense-industry workers, and similar individuals who had participated in conjunction with the United State's military in the 20th century.  The Library of Congress assigned this task to its American Folklife Center, which dubbed the resulting program the "Veterans History Project" (VHP).

The The Wiregrass Archives became an official partner in the VHP in 2002, collecting oral history interviews, artifacts, documents, and photographs from veterans and others in the Wiregrass Region.

Biography:  Francis Angus Farris of Elba, AL, was the CO of Battery D, 117th Field Artillery, 31st Div., a National Guard unit called up for the Korean Conflict in 1952.  Farris was stationed at Ft. Jackson, SC.

Scope / Content Note: One-page recounting of the life and military service of Francis Angus Farris, authored by his son, James R. Farris.

Provenance:  James Farris authored this account of his father's life to give to the The Wiregrass Archives as a consequence of Dr. Olliff speaking to the Dothan Golden K Kiwanis Club, 5-25-2006.  Ms. Mary Farris refused to sign a gift agreement in February 2009, writing that Mr. Farris had provided the information to the Heritage of Coffee County publication committee.  Dr. Olliff checked with Enterprise Public Library on February 27, 2009, to discover the published account and this account are the same.
